Summer School STEM Class—"The Ashley Open”

This summer the Arcadia Summer School Students undertook a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) project that was presented to them thanks to Ashley Furniture. The project was to design and build a mini golf course! Students were divided up into groups and tasked with designing their own hole to be a part of the mini golf course. Each group began by sketching ideas and created a scaled drawing of the hole they planned to build. Once they had a blueprint, students created 3d models of their blueprints to replicate the process that engineers go through when presenting their ideas. Once a model was built, the students spent two weeks constructing their actual mini golf hole by scaling up their blue prints by a factor of 10. Through the process students had to learn cardboard construction skills, problem solve, and work as a team to meet the demands of their designs. Once the final projects were completed the students tested the holes to find any flaws and then they calculated the average score shot on the hole to determine par for the hole and course.

To cap off the project, students showcased their work on the last day of the session and allowed all the other summer school students to play a round on their newly built course. Overall, the students were proud of the hard work they put into each an every hole, and they learned some valuable skills in the field of STEM!”
