Students Embrace Digital Narratives to Tell a Story
Students in English IV are studying how stories have evolved overtime. First, they were told orally, performed live in theater, written and illustrated, filmed and now stories are told through digital narratives. In groups of two, students were able to choose a topic to complete a digital story about. The only guidelines they were given was there needed to be still pictures, videos, clear storyline, narration and they had the opportunity to enhance using music, titles and special effects. Some topics included braces, corn, Kris Jenner and ice fishing.

During student creation, Ms. Nelson, High School English Language Arts teacher, observed students organizing complex ideas, watching them add new elements and building off previous elements and creating a unified whole digital story. Each student had to research to support the topic and share experiences within their story. Using digital media, they were able to enhance the understanding of their topic and add interest for their viewers. Ms. Nelson states, “The students allowed their own interests and creativity to be the driving force of their 60-second documentaries. I can’t wait to see what they create next!”
